The Jensen Ranch Running Club is a daily before-school run club where students can see for themselves the boost that morning exercise can give their moods and ability to focus and learn. Numerous studies show drastic improvement in academics, test scores, and behavior in schools that implement a “zero hour” fitness program. It’s also an opportunity for our kids to see the value of small investments of time and energy: if they show up every day, over the course of months they might run the distance of a marathon or two. We want them to see how fitness can be woven into life, and even a little exercise can have a big impact.
Run Club will begin at 7:45 am Monday through Friday on days school is in session. The gate will be staffed by a parent volunteer to allow participants to enter campus from 7:45-7:50 am. At 7:50 the gate will be locked until the campus is opened at 8 for the school day. Students may run, skip, walk, leap, or hop as many laps as possible until the first bell rings at 8:00, at which time students can finish the lap they are on and turn in their badge.
If the weather is wet, windy, smokey, or very hot, please check your texts as Run Club may be canceled. See information below on signing up for Remind text communication.
Runners are expected to go directly to the blacktop, drop off their backpacks at the designated spot, pick up their runner badges, and start running their laps right away. If they want to walk, jog, run, sprint, or skip, they may do so, but they need to be moving forward in line with the stated mission of the club. Having fun is encouraged, disrupting others as they exercise is not.
Kindergarteners and first graders must have a responsible adult present during Run Club.
We will need volunteers daily from 7:40 - 8. Tasks will include 1) staffing the front gate from 7:45-7:50, 2) to set up the track around the blacktop, 3) to set up the badges so students can grab them and start running, 4) to scan the badges as students go (this will be done on an app that can be downloaded onto your phone), and 5) to supervise, encourage, and cheer students on. Volunteers must have Megan’s Law Clearance filed with the office.
If your child is participating in Run Club, you will need to volunteer in person at least once per week. If you are unable to participate in person, please contact our Run Club Coordinator [email protected] for behind the scenes ways to help. Adults who are present and not staffing a particular job are encouraged to join the students in walking or running. Adults are expected to follow the Code of Conduct and set good examples of behavior and attitude for the students.
Jensen Ranch Run Club participants are expected to follow these rules:
- Wear appropriate shoes and clothing for running outdoors given the weather.
- Listen to and promptly obey volunteers and staff.
- Treat everyone with respect, and do not disrupt others’ exercise
- Go directly to the blacktop and remain there, the rest of the campus and the play structure is off limits.
- Run or walk the correct direction on the field or blacktop.
- Bring a filled water bottle.
- Not come if I am sick or have an injury that would prevent me from participating.
- Follow the Jensen Ranch Code of Conduct
Failure to follow the rules will result in removal from Run Club.
JOINING
To join the run club, parents or guardians need to submit the following forms:
- Jensen Ranch Elementary Run Club Liability Waiver and Permission Form
- Jensen Ranch Elementary Run Club Code of Conduct and Expectations
- Jensen Ranch Elementary Run Club Student Contact Information
- PTA Participant/Volunteer Waiver Form
Please email [email protected] with any questions.
Once Families Sign Up:
- You will be given information to join our Remind text group - this will only be used to send you a text message if run club is canceled for some reason.
- Student will be issued a lanyard with a personalized bar code badge that will be kept at school and passed out each morning. Volunteers scan these bar codes when the children complete each lap around the track. The electronic information is then uploaded to a program called StrideTrack® where you can login to see your child’s mileage. We will be honoring and recognizing milestones such as five miles, ten miles, half marathon, 20 miles, full marathon, etc. We also hope to create class and school wide totals so the kids can see how far their whole class has run.
Running Club FAQS
When is Running Club? Every morning, Monday through Friday, before school. Running time is from 7:40 am to 8:00 am. Be sure to pack your child a water bottle so they can stay hydrated. We will not run if it is raining or the air quality is poor.
How many laps does it take to run 1 mile? 5 laps around our blacktop equals 1 mile.
How can parents help? We will need volunteers daily from 7:40 - 8. Tasks will include 1) staffing the front gate from 7:45-7:50, 2) to set up the track around the blacktop, 3) to set up the badges so students can grab them and start running, 4) to scan the badges as students go (this will be done on an app that can be downloaded onto your phone), and 5) to supervise, encourage, and cheer students on. How can I see how far/fast my child has run?
To login in using your home computer:
Go to: https://www.stridetrack.net/StrideTrack/#
Enter the Runner ID which is the bar code numbers located on your child’s running club badge. Note: the runner ID changes each school year so you will need to update your child’s account when new badges are issued.
